UK police trialing facial recognition tech that can ID individuals in seconds

 Leicestershire Police is the first force in the UK test new ‘face recognition’ software which could transform the way criminals are tracked down. It’s called NeoFace and it’s capable of comparing any digital image - such as CCTV or police body camera footage - with any photo held on the Leicestershire Police database. The computer programme has been under evaluation for a couple of months and around two hundred suspects have already been put through the system, with a high success rate of identification. It works by comparing dozens of measurements between key facial features. It’s impressive because it provides initial results in just a matter of a few seconds. The current system, although computerised, involves manually searching for possible matches, which can take up to several hours. Chief Inspector Chris Cockerill said: “We’re very proud to be the first UK Police force to evaluate this new system. Initial results have been very promising and we’re looking forward to seeing what can be achieved throughout the six month trial.” While the results can’t be used as evidence in court, the programme does give detectives significant help in developing new lines of enquiry. Identity unit Manager Andy Ramsay said: “We have over ninety-thousand photos on our system and Neo-Face can compare someone’s image against our complete databases in seconds. Besides the speed it’s also impressive because it can even find family members related to the person we’re trying to identify.”

The galaxy NGC 4258 is much like our galaxy

Some 23 million light years away, a nearby spiral galaxy is spinning like a pinwheel in space, putting on a fireworks display of truly galactic proportions.

The galaxy NGC 4258 (also known as Messier 106 or M 106) is much like our galaxy, with the addition of two extra spiral arms that glow in X-ray, optical and radio light. These features, rather than aligning with the galactic plane, intersect with it, giving it an anomalous shape. 

A new composite image of the oddly-formed galaxy and its pyrotechnic proclivities was recently published by NASA. In the image, X-rays by NASA's Chandra Observatory are blue, radio data from NSF's Karl Jansky Very Large Array are purple, optical data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope are yellow and infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope are red.

The cause of NGC 4528’s spectacular activity was recently explained in the June 20, 2014, issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters and is available online. 

According to researchers, a supermassive black hole which sits at the center of the galaxy is churning out a truly psychedelic display of radiant stellar energy equal to tens of millions of suns. 

The black hole is believed to be producing powerful jets of high-energy particles, which strike the disc of the galaxy. The disc, which is mainly composed of gas, dust and stars, generates shockwaves in the process. The shockwaves serve to heat the gas – mainly composed of hydrogen molecules – to thousands of degrees.

Researchers think that this ejection is occurring at such a fast clip, the gas will be exhausted within the next 300 million years, leaving less available gas to form new stars in the future. As a result, they believe 10 times fewer stars are being produced in NGC 4258 than in our own Milky Way. 

“Jets from the super-massive black hole at the center of M 106 are having a profound influence on the available gas for making stars in this galaxy," said Patrick Ogle, an astrophysicist at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and co-author of the study. 

“This process may eventually transform the spiral galaxy M 106 into a lenticular galaxy, depriving it of the raw material to form stars." 

The opportunity to study NGC 4258 is providing scientists valuable insight into the nature of black holes and the life cycle of galaxies. In this instance, the immensely destructive capacity of a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy is on display in all of its kaleidoscopic glory.

Everyone has a bad day on occasion. But what if Facebook made it worse

Internet users have reacted angrily to news that Facebook researchers manipulated the content some users were shown in an attempt to gauge their emotional response. 690,000 users. Some people were shown a higher number of positive posts, while others were shown more negative posts.

The results of the experiment, conducted by researchers from Cornell, the University of California, San Francisco and Facebook, were published this month in the prestigious academic journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The study found that users that were shown more negative content were slightly more likely to produce negative posts. Users in the positive group responded with more upbeat posts.

So it worked! Facebook was able to successfully change the emotional state of its users. While the mood changes were small, the researchers argued that the findings have major implications given the size and scale of the social network.

Facebook's term of service gives the company permission to conduct this kind of research, but many users have reacted with anger at what they say is a dangerous social experiment. There is no indication that the 690,000 subjects were asked if they would like to take part in the study.

Facebook uses an algorithm to determine which of roughly 1,500 available posts will show up in a user's News Feed. The company frequently changes this program to modify the mix of news, personal stories and advertisements seen by users

Fantasy will become reality this weekend when the NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Grand Turismo® makes its global debut as part of the brand's thrilling and action-packed Goodwood Festival of Speed programme.
The covers come off the NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo® on Thursday 26 June at 13:00 on the Nissan stand, giving visitors the first chance to see the car up close.

Furthermore, as part of the festivities, Nissan's Chief Planning Officer, Andy Palmer, along with the brand's Chief Creative Officer, Design and Brand Management, Shiro Nakamura, will also be at Goodwood over the course of the weekend to meet members of the media and public alike.

Conceived by the team from Nissan's European design studio in London for the latest installment of the legendary PlayStation driving franchise, Gran Turismo®, the concept points to how a Nissan supercar of the future could look.

And its much-anticipated first appearance will be one of the highlights of a scintillating 2014 festival presence that will showcase like never before the spirit of innovation and excitement embedded in Nissan's DNA.

World’s First Fully Transparent Smartphone Unveiled By Polytron

This week Polytron has unveiled the world’s first fully transparent smartphone prototype to the world. The Taiwanese company has been developing the design for sometime and the only visible components on the transparent smartphone are its board, memory chip and camera.

The transparent smartphone is mainly constructed from glass, and is equipped with a touchscreen interface positioned in the centre of the device, which at the moment provides just simple functionality.

The design is more a proof-of-concept at the moment, and may cause a few problems when more features are added, making it tricky to read on a transparent screen and anything you type will be visible from behind by others. However Polytron, is planning to market its technology by the end of 2013.

Unfortunately no information on pricing or worldwide availability has been released as yet, but as soon as information comes to light we will keep you updated as always.

Google To Build £1 Billion HQ In London

Google is building a new headquarters here in the UK, the search giant has purchased a 2.4 acre site which is situated between Kings Cross and St Pancras Stations in London.

Google will be building a seven and eleven story building on the site, and the total cost of the build plus the land is expected to be around £1 billion, and the project is expected to be finished by some time in 2016.

Google has two offices in central London already, one is located in Victoria and the other is off St Giles High Street, Google are expected to move their operations from these offices to their new London HQ.

Described to be the greatest wine ever made, the Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947 boasts such an extraordinary reputation that in the recent decades it has consistently fetched the highest price of any comparable Bordeaux. We have earlier seen that this iconic wine which has been given A class status in the Classification of Saint-Emilion wine, set a record of single bottle sold at Christie’s auction in Geneva to a private collector for $304,580, to become the one of the world’s most expensive wines. Acclaimed not only for its rare quality but also for its longevity, the Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947 has now topped the Hong Kong sale held on January 13th. As the lot of 6 bottles consigned from a private cellar in Bordeaux and presented in a new wooden Cheval Blanc case achieved an impressive price of $83,845.

Notably, the vintage 1947 was characterized by near perfect weather with very little rain and exceptionally warm conditions, and is also described as ‘an accident of nature’ by Pierre Lurton, who manages the estate on behalf of its owners.
This vintage wine that resembles no other had a long finish, no dryness, and offers suppleness, power, licorice, cedar, plum, velvety tannis, an unequalled smoothness, and an endless finale.

Château Cheval Blanc is a wine producer in Saint-Émilion in the Bordeaux wine region of France, and its wine is one of only four to receive the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in the Classification of Saint-Émilion wine.

The largest megayacht ever built by CRN unveiled

In an event which created history, CRN Shipyard, the Ferretti Group unveiled the largest yacht ever in its history, the 80 metres long Chopi Chopi, in Ancona, Italy. The yacht which was built after approximately 660,000 working hours, is the 129th pleasure vessel built by the shipyard. The efforts of two great firms stand behind this unique work: Studio Zuccon International Project, who designed the interior and exterior layout and Studio Laura Sessa Romboli, who are currently finishing the interior furniture and decor. Chopi Chopi is a steel and aluminium displacement hull yacht boasting of 5 (+1) decks. What sets it apart is its spaciousness, light and airy environment, streamlined yet soft lines, attention to details and direct contact with the sea. The yacht can accommodate 12 guests across six guest suites, in addition to having place for the 23 crew members and 10 staff members. Making this structure even more special are the beach club, 100sq meter swimming platform with a sea view, indoor fitness area with a spa including a sauna, Turkish bath and massage area plus a helipad.

The yacht which is a pride for Italy’s boating industry is also the perfect example of the company’s superlative craftsmanship and its value exceeds around $107 million.
